Police Bikes in America

America's police officers began cycling in the late 19th century. With the arrival of the bike boom of the 1890s, police bikes came into widespread use in North American cities.

The maneuverability of these mountain bikes on congested sidewalks and their ability to navigate tight, jammed lanes gives them an advantage over cars.

Today bicycle patrols are more typical in temperate urban areas where restricted coverage for autos exists. The use of bicycles instead of cars makes police officers more readily approachable. Bikes are also used by police officers to improve the mobility and reach of former foot patrols.

A bicycle patrol will have at least twice as many contacts with the public in the average hour than an officer in a patrol car. This information tells us simply that police officers' activity level on bicycles is higher than that of the officers in cars.

Does my department need law enforcement bikes?

Bicycle patrols are an excellent addition to any department. Positive contact with citizens and additional mobility are just two of the benefits. Police bikes are becoming more popular due to those reasons. For more information you can use the resources below.
